Toy Soldier. At least that’s what I call it. Like everything else here, I just start collecting parts which might seem to go together. Once the cutting and building starts things start to go their own way. The art begins to dictate what the art will be. Every piece I make is predicated on trying to not do anything I have done before. Pry boundaries and limitations out of mystery’s hands. Ovals are murder to build into. Only other oval is on this site ... called “Red.” Nothing fits into ovals. This red oval was sort of an awkward affair with cogs. Just piled them on until it seemed to work. The gears on their sides came from a “Wouldn’t it be crazy if ...” sort of mentality. My whole art life is full of this. “How wild would it be if ...” And that’s just building the broach. Photography opens a whole nother can of worms. Typically I shoot 200 pictures of each piece. Every angle. Different times of day. Waiting for the miracle moment. As little Photoshop as possible.
